What is a childminder?
A childminder looks after one or more children under 8 for at least 2 hours a day in the childminders home. All childminders must be registered by Ofsted, who set standards in which childminders must abide by. Childminders need to have their own policies and procedures in place in their setting.
Opportunities for children
Childminders are able to offer a more varied setting than other kind of childcare environments. They can offer continuity of care, a home based environment, daily outings and a more personal relationship with the children and their families. Registered childminders are committed to offering a high standard service and a high quality of play and learning opportunities for your child. Childminders have undertaken training and take on further training to learn how to develop and understand children’s physical, intellectual, emotional and educational needs.
Flexibility
Many childminders can be flexible and some can offer full/part time care, weekend cover, early mornings and late evenings. If stated in their registration, overnight care may also be provided. Nursery and school runs are also offered along with care for older siblings.
Safety Regulations
All registered childminders are inspected by Ofsted. They will ensure that the childminder is a suitable person, their home is safe and child friendly and that all polices are in place. Ofsted will ensure that children are given opportunities to develop and thrieve in a child-based environment. The childminder and anyone over the age of 16 in the childminders home will have a full CRB check carried out. Childminders must have public liability insurance and business cover on their car insurance policy.
